The WhatsApp team announced that it’d discontinued development for BlackBerry OS, BlackBerry 10, and Windows Phone on December 31, 2017. It’s no longer possible to create new accounts or re-verify accounts on smartphones running those operating systems, though the app’s core messaging features will continue to work for the time being. The decision by the WhatsApp team because of BlackBerry and Microsoft’s inability to have any impact in today’s smartphone market. China-based TCL took over the BlackBerry brand in 2016.
